To add Gmail in Outlook 2010, follow these steps: Open Outlook 2010. To make Outlook 2010 connect to Gmail using an IMAP connection, check Disable POP and then check Enable IMAP. Even so, I checked that all the Exchange options were set as exceptions on the server firewall and Outlook set on the client.To make Outlook 2010 connect to Gmail using a POP connection, check Enable POP (either one works) and then check Disable IMAP. I also am running the client machine as an administrator the email account is for me on these tests. I turned off the firewall on Exchange Server and on the client machine. Since it is not "connecting" with the Exchange Server I thought maybe it might be a firewall issue. This was working just fine with the very same account in Office 2007 and before. And yes, Exchange is set up for IMAP and POP3. To repeat, the only account in the profile. Tried the same thing with IMAP and got the same result.

Outlook was still not able to connect to the Exchange Server with this as a POP3 account. I set up another profile and only added the POP3 account with correct credentials and server settings (it is on the local LAN). Exchange won't let me willy-nilly send email from different email addresses, even if those addresses are part of the mailbox (at least I don't know how to enable that since it is user or group based, and we are talking email accounts here). Suppose I were a manufacturer's rep, for example, and wanted to be able to reply from different email domains to mimic being in different companies. Let me say this another way: as a user, I have several domain identities that I want to keep in one Outlook profile, read inbox and associated set of folders.

Exchange Server seemed to authenticate the user with domain credentials. Prior to sending an email, a user could click on the account button and select the alternative smtp address for sending mail. It would be part of the send/receive group for Exchange, but it would be set to send, not to receive. Heretofore, the solution was to set up a POP3 or IMAP account in addition to the Exchange account. In other words, all mail sent will come from the default domain. When Outlook sets up the Exchange Account, it (seems to) use the default SMTP address associated with the account. What I am my supported users need is the ability to SEND email from one of those domains or another (if there were more than 2, e.g.). That works at the Exchange level Outlook is not involved. As in my posted example, mail comes to user for both domains and. The issue is not at all receiving mail Exchange does that automatically when I set the domains it accepts email from and adds smtp addresses to users with those domains. It is common for me and for all the users I support to want to be able to have several presences - i.e., different domain email accounts but all belong to the same Exchange mailbox. I have also tried to manually enter the from email address (i.e., but Exchange kicks it back as an unauthorized sender, even though it is a valid email address for that mailbox. I have tried this on several different client machines as well as on several different Exchange Servers (completely different forest and domains, to be clear). I have tried using both the user name alone as well as domain\user name, and both fail. With Outlook 2010, an attempt to set up POP3/IMAP works as setting up the new account, but then the authorization to access the server fails - either type of email account and either for send or receive. It would also change the signature if one were defined for that alternate email. When the email was sent, it went out with from that email address. When composing an email, it was possible to click on Account and choose either the Exchange Account or the POP3/IMAP Account.

I believe I have seen some hints of people having this issue, but have not seen a complete discussion of the problem.
